Kitchen tables can, by nature, be more casual than dining room tables. So experiment by painting the top one color and the base another—or stain the top and paint the base. One favorite is a dark-stained top (think cherry or light mahogany) and a white base; it’s a great look, particularly on pedestal tables.

Oh I love this question so much and it’s one that I get a ton of emails and message about. I’ve written two posts on this subject, which you can check out here and here, but I’d say that if you’re just getting started with creating a farmhouse look in your home there are three main things you can focus on that won’t cost you much at all:  1) Paint colors–this is one of the easiest and fastest ways to change the vibe in your home. Plus it sets the foundation for how the rest of your decor and furniture looks.  I recommend going with something natural and soft. I recently put a list of farmhouse style paint colors together, which you can find here. 2) Avoid mass produced, “cute” decor. I know, this is controversial and I don’t mean you have to avoid all mass produced decor. I have plenty of it! But just be very selective in what you buy. I’ve talked about this before, but I recommend not filling your home with a lot of items that don’t add personality or character. To me, farmhouse style is all about charm and coziness, with a focus on vintage and timeless simplicity. Clearing your house of clutter and those cute little wooden bears that say “home sweet home” will get you started on creating a home with classic character–which is a key component of farmhouse style.  3) Paint your existing furniture a neutral color. If you don’t love it, paint it. That’s my motto. This might apply to your old dining table, outdated TV console, or maybe that big hutch in your dining more that needs a fresh look. Also don’t be afraid to get out there and find a used option that you can buy for cheap. The dining table is a great example of that. I wanted a new table for our breakfast nook, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. I bought this used for $50 and painted it. You can see the before and after here.

Of course, round bistro tables of as little as 2 ft. (61 cm) in diameter have been around a long time, and many breakfast tables are 42 in. or 48 in. (107 or 122 cm). But a formal dining table needs to be at least 60 in. (152 cm) in diameter and can easily be 72 in. (183 cm) as well.

Kitchen tables come in a variety of styles, from pedestal to farmhouse. But when you inherit your aunt’s Queen Anne drop leaf, complete with glass rings—or maybe you find a Gustavian dining table complete with bad faux finish at a garage sale—try a few painted kitchen table design ideas.

Dining table. If you want to get the kids to the dinner table, make it enticing! A dining table painted in high-gloss may not get them to eat their vegetables, but at least it will be a treat for the eyes.

Wingback host and hostess chairs, a banquette covered in a geometric David Hicks fabric and carved dining chairs painted a deep red surround an antique dining table. Grasscloth wall covering, architectural remnants and traditional sconces and trim mix with Asian touches, breathing new life into traditional style.

If you have any old furniture that is looking worn out, try freshening it up with paint. If you’re brand new to painting furniture, you will not believe the transformation. Now keep in mind, this doesn’t always work for everything, and some furniture is better left in its natural color. However, I’ve found that keeping your furniture within the same color scheme really pulls the entire room together–kind of like having your wall colors match. I painted this old dining table and the transformation was pretty darn awesome. You can see how I did it here.

A to-the-studs gut renovation in 2012 overseen by local design firm TerraCotta Properties delivered exactly that, transforming the once cramped area into a hardworking combination of cook space, mudroom, laundry center, reading nook, dining spot, and office. Now twice its former size (knocking down the wall to the adjoining dining room enlarged it to 260 square feet), the space is clean-lined and storage-smart—and sees action nearly round the clock. “If we’re at home and not sleeping, we’re in the kitchen,” says Sarah. “It’s been a total life changer. I still walk in every day and love it.”

hi! I’m about to chalk paint and wax our dining room table. just wondering if now, 2 years out, you’re still happy with the wear on the table, particularly the legs? this will be our primary dining space and will see a lot of use, with kids’ feet and chair legs banging into it. your opinion would be appreciated!

So funny…all the similarities! We had an office before we had our last child, and I do miss it, but I also like being close to everyone instead of holed up in the office by myself. As far as making a decision about the dining set, maybe they would just be happy you still have it and treasure it…even if its painted.

So every now and then I get a wild hair to move things around and completely re-do the entire house. My mom says this started when I was about 10 years old and she’d find me rearranging all the furniture in my room on a regular basis. And then I’d do the living room. I can still remember her and my dad telling me not to try moving furniture alone because I’d hurt myself. Weird? Possibly. But I’d say that’s just a girl who knew the value of freshening things up from time to time, which explains why my home now is always evolving and changing. And maybe why I’m addicted to DIY projects. So it probably won’t surprise you that I’m back today with a little breakfast nook makeover. Well, actually it’s just a new dining table makeover, but it really feels like this space has new life with this swap.
